Lea brought me to the parking garage, and tossed me a key, splitting to the other side of the car. I'm not sure where it came from, but I caught the key before it could hit my eyes. I took a moment to admire the hearse again. It wasn't the Blue Beetle... but then again, it wasn't the Blue Beetle.

The car looked like it had been freshly waxed and gleamed. The faint hint of blue was only a suggestion in the dim lighting, but the electric purple flames were clear and bold.

Yeah, I liked it. If nothing else, I had a feeling it wouldn't take nearly as much money to keep up compared to what I had lavished on repairs for the Beetle. Which was good. I still didn't have a bank account set up yet, and I still didn't have a nickel in my pockets.

I slid into the car, to find Lea already in the passenger seat.

“Are you following me?”

“Yes. I'm to observe you. Molly... had some concerns. As do I. You adapted to the Mantle far more quickly than I could have guessed.”

I growled under my breath, but kept the first few things I wanted to say down. I can learn. Eventually. I started the car, and backed out of the parking spot before speaking.

“You mean it got me quickly.”

“La, you made it your own, child. It is a bridge between Winter's power and your own, not a rushing river. In taking from Winter, you had to venture in. You brought yourself into that power. What you looked for was what you gained.”

The breaks squealed and I was flung forward into the steering wheel.

Ah. There went any locking retractors to the seat belts.

“Are you saying I brought this on myself?” I demanded, still hunched over the steering wheel, wheezing.

Lea was still perfectly in place when I sat back up, one eyebrow arched. “The sudden stop was certainly your fault.”

“The Mantle, the–” I made a vague hand motion, and ending it, pointing back toward Molly.

“Yes?” asked Lea, artfully innocent, but her eyes knowing, waiting. “Do continue.”

“The feelings.”

“Feelings?” she parroted.

“Stars and stones, you know what I mean.”

“What you found of Winter's power, you took for yourself, incorporating it into the Mantle. There are older additions for your predecessors as well. Ancient knowledge, from the founding of the Courts. There are few among us who have such power, my son.”

And once more we were back to the ghosts of Winter Knight's past. At least now, thanks to Molly, I knew I wasn't becoming Lloyd Slate Jr.

I eased of the break, and drove out of the the garage, with a nod from the parking attended. I guess they had been forewarned about me.

So, the funny thing about the Nevernever was time, and how it never ran straight or smooth. So far, I hadn't stepped out of it to find a hundred years had passed, but I knew enough to know it could happen. Honestly, I was pretty sure the only reason it hadn't happened yet was there was too much fun to be had in torturing me in the present time.

The universe had a really bad sense of humor.

Instead, it looked like only two weeks had passed. To be specific, it looked like the last two weeks of November had passed.

Christmas had exploded over Chicago, with more lights than I had ever seen. The lights at nearly every window and door made the street lamps superfluous. They were all colors of the rainbow, from the simple white lights to the multicolored strands with big bulbs out of the fifties to the blue Stars of David.

“More Christmas lights than last year.”

“More need,” Lea said. “The emptiness of the Outside is pressing harder this season. Each little light is another piece of hope for our victory”

“You know, about the Gates?” I ventured.

She laughed once, the sound musical, but with an odd wilding key to it. “Of course I know, child. I am my queen's handmaiden. If I did not know of the Outer War, I would be of no use.”

“The lights help?”

“Why do you think one of your most important holidays has been during the height of our power?”

“I dunno, I kind of blamed co-opting of pagan holidays for Christmas.”

She gave me an exasperated look. “Winter celebrations have been important in the mortal world long before that. They have been since it became Winter's turn to guard the Gates. The power of wonder and belief that mortals give us during this time has been turning points in times past. This year it may be vital again.”

I decided not to mention the general rise of crime during December. My godmother wouldn't care about the petty shoplifting and purse snatching, and she would be entertained rather than horrified by the crimes of passion. Faeries.

Debates on the season aside, I indulged slightly and toke a more circuitous route than I would have originally. My girl Chicago was all made up, and it was only polite to admire.

Finally, auto pilot made me pull into Pizza Spress.

The bored teenager at the counter perked up when he saw me and Lea.

“Cool outfits,” he said, looking us up and down with frank appraisal that might have been offensive, if I still hadn't been in my finery from the Winter bash I had so publicly—.

That.

And Lea was always eye-catching. She was in a shimmering dress of blue and silver, with a weight you usually didn't see in modern clothes. Add to that her wild mane of red hair, the high cheekbones, a
and wicked lips, and I knew why people were staring.

“You in a play?” the teenager asked.

The Nutcracker,” I said. “I'm the wizard uncle, she's the Sugar Plum Fair.”

“Where you playing?” the kid asked.

“Last show was tonight,” I invented wildly, and added before he could ask something else, “I'm here to get pizza for the cast party.” I tripled the usual order for Toot and his crew, figuring they deserved.

The snag came when I got the hundred plus bill, and the kid asked if it was cash or credit.

“Harry Dresden's tab,” Lea interjected smoothly.

The kids eyes got wide at that, and the pizzas arrived far more quickly than they should have.

“Hell's bells, what happened? And since when do have I had a tab there?” I asked, as we loaded the pizza into the backseat of the car. I was pretty sure you couldn't even have a tab at Pizza Spress. I would have found out before

“Your baron created it. I have made use of it in your name in the past.”

Marcone. Joy. Another thing to add to my list of problems I should look into. However, I wasn't one to turn down free pizza, not with the ravaging horde to feed.

“I was always fond of Pyotr,” my godmother mused. “It is good to see his work is well remembered, especially that trifle he wrote for me.”

I started the car and gunned it. Things always got a little weird if you started Lea on about one of her former lovers, and I really didn't want to hear how Tchaikovsky fit in.

Your Lea is really fun. I'm glad she's sticking around. Harry still seems kind of delicate, but I'm really looking forward to how things progress.
