There's that, yeah. Harry's always been on pretty thin ice with the Council.

I think there's a difference, though, between saying 'hey, magic is real' and actually giving information and proof and so on. The first gets you written off as a flake by most people, which Harry is all the time, but still lets people who are already clued in know that you know. The second is the real problem as far as the PTB are concerned. It provides targets, weaknesses, tactics, etc.

It would be very easy for a wizard to prove that magic is real, even with the tech issues slowing things down. Harry could easily give demonstrations to everyone in SI, but instead lets them treat him like a fake or lunatic. He eventually decides he cares more about helping people stay alive than staying out of trouble with the council but he's still not spreading information to anyone who doesn't already know enough to be looking for it.

Y'know, it's really interesting that what with Harry spending so much time with the Carpenters that Molly was still fucking ignorant of what could get her head lopped off, not to mention possibly set her on an uncontrollable spiral of degeneration. People Harry associates with regularly don't seem to know enough about the Laws to protect themselves should they gain magical abilities.

Technically, the only people who knew about Molly's magic where herself and her mother. Charity knew about the Laws, and Molly hadn't seen Harry regularly for a while by the point she developed her magic. Charity (with totes valid reasons) did a pretty good job of keeping the "realities" of magic out of her kid's lives. Not saying that Harry is consistently, spectacularly good at keeping information from people (case in point: this whole series), but there were some extenuating circumstances around Molly's case.

While I'm pretty sure Charity didn't know Molly had magic, Charity's teenage and young adult years consisted largely of demonstrations that ignorance was no protection from anything. I wouldn't consider her decision to keep her kids ignorant of the Laws and realities of magic to be valid. Understandable, maybe; trying to block that whole time period out of her life is completely understandable, but not valid. Even if she didn't know her kids might inherit her magic, Charity is herself proof that magic can just turn up, and that if it does a lack of knowledge and support will lead to disaster. She set Molly up for exactly the same fall she went through. It was a bad move.

My feeling on this is: forget Harry, why didn't Michael tell his kids this stuff? There's no way a Knight of the Cross isn't informed on this subject, or the consequences of messing around with dark magic. It wasn't Harry's responsibility to educate the children of a friend he didn't talk to much anymore, especially given that their mother didn't want him near them. Both Molly's parents could and should have done it, even with, maybe especially with, Charity's valid issues on the topic.

This just demonstrates the utter fuckedup-ness of the supernatural world. Clued in people not telling their kids about basic dangers--even if none of the Carpenter children had any magical talent they could easily meet some random kid who does. Just knowing that yes, really, someone using magic in certain ways is very likely going to be a seriously destructive person to be wary of seems pretty simple?

Abstinence-only magical education! Or maybe that's giving them too much credit?
