Punk!Johnny starts to have these really weird dreams. He can see himself in them - but it's him older. Twenty - maybe thirty - years older. It's like accidentally tuning into Mexican radio, all crackly and weird, the words half-recognised but faint and fuzzy.

But he keeps having this dream. Over and over until he thinks he's going insane. And the words slowly get clearer until the message gets through. Even then, it sounds crazy. Go find a kid called Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden and save his scrawny idiot ass.

Only crazy people do things they get told to in dreams. He's not going to do it, no way.

But then he finds himself in the neighbourhood. It's not like he thinks he'll meet anyone, not with that long name to boot. Naw... but shit, there's a house on fire. Just started, looks like. He heads over, and sees this scrawny ass kid come spilling out, all wild-eyed and gangle limb.

And the name spills out of his lips, a name he'd never said out loud before but heard every night for the last fucking year and the kid jumps half his height in the air, eyes bugging as they fix on him. That sort of look thats a scream and a plea and a surrender all at once. The kind of look when you've just run out of hell only to find you've stumbled right onto the freeway and a sixteen wheeler is really excited to see you.

The dream was right about the who and the where. Maybe he really did need to save this brat. "Harry?" he tries again. "I'm Johnny. I think I'm meant to save you."

FUCK YEAH!

Punk!mafia-goon!Johnny is going to save badass!magic!teenager!Harry's ass, and then they will meet Nathan Hendricks, and they will take over the Outfit with sharp knives and blazing guns and magical explosions, and John will make Harry wear suits and that will be awful but Harry will dress up so well and they will be awesome together!

Curious-- in this universe, what are you seeing Marcone's impetus to take over the mob? And what compromises Harry to that point?

Not the OP, but I can see it happening because he got a glimpse of what it could be like via the dreams/whatever, and thus works to recreate it. Alternately, it could be that he takes control because he saw that he'd taken control. A self-fulfilling prophesy, so to say.

I think this is super interesting, but also really don't see John (especially young John) as the Going To Listen To What A Prophecy Says type. More the Fuck You It's My Own Life type. Although it would certainly be an interesting conflict! Accidentally taking over might be more his-Harry's style, especially if Any Anonthor wanted to keep Harry more IC.

To add my two cents in:

Vargassi is a shit-head and a dangerous one.

If John is helping Harry out, keeping him away from the Wardens and all, than he probably wouldn't be too happy to stay in a city with a man like that in charge.

Or, possibly: Harry gets hurt, would end up like Amanda Beckitt if his magic hadn't helped him out. Johnny vows 'never again'.

I can definitely see John's growing social awareness (not that he's that socially aware in canon, bless his heart) eventually decided that Vargassi was Bad For His City, although I do imagine it might take some time or a catalyst. That said, I'm super curious to how he'd keep Harry away from Wardens; if they were properly motivated, and I imagine they would be, because for all they know, unknown apprentice a has gone warlock (which, technically, he had) and just killed one of their own. Add to that the addictive nature of black magic, Harry not knowing the laws, and the really D: D: D: places Harry (and John) could end up in the Council doesn't find him.

Well, Harry has Bob and Bob can tell him a few tricks on how to avoid the Council and the Warden I think.

Wow, a Bob fresh from the hands of two warlocks, a Harry violently spinning into the land of black magic and irredemption, and John's trying to hold on to them all with his shaky relative moral standing. This AU just got dark.

... but this one is calling to me, if we can brainstorm it a little more.

I can see Harry not being a warlock like Justin was if only because he's going to reject everything Justin did or liked after what went through him.

But he would undoubtedly be a warlock and unaware of the laws of magic, which means he won't be as troubled by doing the kind of things he thinks may help John out (Reading in his enemies minds? Killing through magic?) as he would be in canon.

Also they would have the Leanasidhe on their asses and I'm sure that would lead Harry and John both to search about loopholes and lawyer speak (Hendricks would be a huge asset about that)

Yeah, Harry doesn't really know too much of Justin's plans (although his subconscious obviously had a clearer understand of thrall than he would admit to), but he definitely wouldn't want to model his behaviour on him! But he'd already have killed, and transforming others is one of those go-to non-magic mudane things that John might think of and ask Harry to do. Not to mention the urge to go back in time and fix it. Oh dear.

I think that John would be smart enough to avoid the 'going back in time' shtick ... or if he isn't Hendricks can talk them out of it by citing paradoxes and everything (and Bob can add his two cents in about it being a bad idea, better avoid it as much as possible).

Though transforming others ... yeah that they would.

I can see John being the corteous one, having the meeting with Lea, while Harry plays with the hounds, throwing the frisbee and giving them sausages (and Hendricks watches on, stone-faced)

(OP here) Hmmmn, well, my meandering mind kindda built up this idea where some point in the first time line that got so utterly fucked that Marcone decided the only way to fix it would be for a total redux of Harry's adult life. Maybe Harry dies or turns into the Ultimate Big Bad because of something that happened to him when he was a late teen. SO, he'd re-do it and stop the Bad Thing that ruined it all, even if that means losing everything. If you think about it too hard, rebooting history would be like committing mass murder and suicide because you're not going to be the person you are, you're potentially making hundreds of people not be born and what not. And he'd be undoing everything he'd been working towards.

So it would have had to be one huge shit storm for him to think this would be an option. A preferable option. But then he has to try and guess when this Bad Thing happened to Harry because he really doesn't know - Harry's teen years are pretty mysterious except for the magic-murder Harry did. But that's a good beacon to go off. Something that fucks with Harry's mind hard enough to turn him into a murderer - it was either the Big Thing or left Harry vulnerable to it. I think Marcone would have tried for even earlier but he knew much younger and his old self would be too young to be able to take care of Harry, and not only that he needs a point where he's already got the idea to take over the Outfit fixed in his head or he won't have the resources both he and Harry will need in the future.

So I think Punk!Johnny is having serious thoughts about how to make it through the ranks and may already be playing through a few of those plans when he starts getting these dreams. Adding Harry into his life might throw the plans onto the backburner for a little while longer, but I think it would still be a very dominant part of Johnny's life, though getting to the top with his half-scorched wizard bff in tow will be all sorts of interesting.

As for what gets Harry into being okay with this - I think it would come rather easily. How much of Harry's current personality is there because of the lessons Eb gave? And the high regard Harry holds the man in, especially in the earlier books. I think Harry would adapt to anyones way of thinking if they got hold of him at that crucial part in his life. Eb imprinted a very black-and-white way of looking at life onto Harry, mostly because I think Eb knew that any sidestep off the purest of paths would be reason enough in the Council's POV to have Harry executed. Or have Eb do it for them.

Without Eb? Without the Doom? I don't think Harry would be the person he is in the books. I think Johnny might have to talk Harry out of some dark self-hate places, but if he offers Harry patience, if he opens his eyes to the fact that there is lesser evils and it takes a lot to be among their ranks, if he fights Harry's corner against any and all comers, I think Harry would accept what has to be done, and will help do it.

Another reason why I think Harry got his personality a little reworked when he was with Eb - it's Bob. Bob gets his personality from his master. The pervy side of Bob I think would come from the fact Harry was a teen when he got control of Bob, but there are other aspects of Bob that kindda make him Not Good. not evil, just not the knight in shining armour like Harry is kindda. Bob isn't chivalrous. Hell, he manipulated Harry into making a date-rape potion in the first book. So, yeah. I think Harry wouldn't have too big a problem with Johnny getting to the top of the food chain so long as he keeps that 'no kids' rule to let them both sleep at night.

But that's just the idle thought pattern my muse took. If it's helpful to any writers, feel free to take it, if not - it's just idle musing on my part.

I like it as much as I like the 'dark'-AU that has been coming out of the comments between me and the other anon in the above thread.

Yours is more of a 'grey'-AU OP but grey zone can be much more interesting and tricky to deal with. Also, I see what you see about Bob especially since Bob has canonically demonstrated a complete disregard for ethics and morals, claiming time and time again to not being able to understand them or being fuzzy on how they work.

I mean, he worked for some pretty shady and fucked up people, a mob boss wouldn't be that much of a stretch for him.

I am enjoying the chatter you and the anon above are having! It's so flattering and fascinating that you guys are talking about my idea and I love it. I'd join in but it seems kindda rude to just leap in to such an awesome jam session.

This actually fits in very well with the way it looks like canon is going: the Bad Thing could be HWWB, and you know all those ominous hints we've been getting about Harry's darker nature and the Outsiders and all that...

...Oooh! Maybe Uriel could be the one to inspire John's plan!
