Dresden's Chauvinism

(Anonymous) 2011-07-25 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
Since I'm a woman, chauvinistic behavior is something that I'll be affected by, and so should be aware of and offended by. I've often heard that a lot of Dresden's behavior is chauvinistic, but I've never noticed it myself. Could someone please explain it to me?

When I hear people talking about his chauvinistic behavior, I tend to hear about things like his opening doors for women. That doesn't strike me as particularly chauvinistic. When Dresden thinks about opening doors for women, it's always framed in the context of 'being polite.' Given that Dresden was raised mainly by people born in the 17th century or earlier, that's normal. As would be opening or holding doors for children, elderly persons, and people with their hands full. Since the other people on that list don't react badly to his manners, Dresden naturally wouldn't include them in his tiny summation of how he doesn't quite fit into society.

Something else that is pointed out as chauvinistic is Dresden's tendency to focus of the sexual attractiveness of any given woman. That, too, has never seemed particularly chauvinistic to me, as Dresden does not think of them as sex objects despite being sexually attractive. I can think of three times off the top of my head where Dresden not only does not make a sexual advance, but also fails to recognize a sexual advance made on him which must then be pointed out to him later. In fact, I always thought he treated men more like objects than women. For example, what I got from his narratives describing Murphy was: an extremely competent police officer, who happens to be an attractive woman, who happens to be my friend; from the descriptions of Molly I got: a spunky and attractive young girl, who is also the daughter of my friend Michael, who has now become my apprentice. To compare, what I got from his descriptions of Thomas is: my brother, who is also my mother's child, who is my relative and therefore a function of me and whose actions reflect upon me, who also happens to be a White Court vampire but that's not important because the important thing is he's deeply important to me; and from his description of Justin I got: a man who has impact because he raised and shaped me, and by the way was probably a terrible person.

Are other people interpreting the books differently and that's why they have a different opinion? Or am I confused in my definition of what constitutes chauvinism and chauvinistic behaviors? I'd really like to know.

There's a difference between manners and consideration. The reason it's polite to open a door for "children, elderly persons, and people with their hands full" is that it's reasonable to expect that they might have trouble opening a heavy door. It's considerate to want to help to someone who would would have difficulties doing something when it would be easy for you to do. They, of course, might not want that help, because they need to be independent, in which case a considerate person would back off, because independence is more important than a minute of trouble with a door.

It might be considerate to hold a door open for anyone, simply because you already have it open and there's no reason for extra effort to be expended by anyone. That's fine too.

But Harry says he's opening doors not because he has reason to think someone needs or wants help or because he'd do it for anyone, but just for women, because they're women. It implies that being a woman is enough to mean you need help and can't so much as open a door without it. This was very common belief for a very long time, and is still very common in many settings, so it's certainly reasonable that it would have been part of the manners Harry was taught, but it's still chauvinistic, and wrong. For that reason, Murphy repeatedly asks him to stop.

It's in not listening to and respecting her wishes that his behavior goes from understandably old-fashioned good manners to insulting. He ignores her, because he thinks his show of (unnecessary) politeness is more important than her (genuine) need to be strong and independent and be perceived as such, especially on the job. That's in no way considerate. He looks like he's helping her but is in fact actively making things harder by implying that she's weak in front of others.

He very frequently says or implies in this way that women need help/protection/guidance just because they're women, which means that he thinks women are less competent/powerful/intelligent then the men he's not as concerned with helping. It's not a good thing.

I'll let someone else tackle the objectifying.

Okay, so, I dunno if I-think-I-may-have-lost-a-fic-from-this-meme comments belong here, and am very sorry if this is not an ok comment because of that but: I think I may have lost a fic. I mean, the rest of the fic. You know tellnooneyourname's awesome trans!harry fic from the first page of part 3? Yeah, I don't know if it's just taking longer than normal to update or if it's continued elsewhere and I just can't find it. I looked in the overflow, but I thought it may be hidden away somewhere I couldn't find. Regardless of whether the next part is up yet, it will have to be somewhere eventually when it is updated because now part three is all full and whatnot. Anyway, rambling. Sorry.
Also: Just wanna say I love this community and all you fellow fans because you are awesome. That is all.

I have the same problem with several different fics here too. :/ Without the anon's name, the search gets even more tedious lol

Fanlore

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I was poking around on fanlore and saw that there are almost no Dresden Files entries, which is a shame. Anyone maybe want to write a paragraph or two? Or even stub entries. Harry Dresden/John Marcone has no text! Harry Dresden has no biography, and no notable fanworks! And no entry at all for Karrin Murphy, Molly, Thomas...
Help would be very much appreciated. (Editing is not nearly as hard as it might look!)

Culture in Dresden Files

(Anonymous) 2011-08-14 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen Harry Dresden repeatedly bashed for his views on sex, consent, gender, and various other things during this meme. I've also seen other characters bashed or prompts encouraging other characters to teach them the error of their ways. For example, a popular prompt is a female character dominating Harry or some other way showing him "the light."

In Dresden Files, multiple cultures, many of them dating back centuries, are introduced. In many ways, there is a parallel between the magical cultures and the non-magical cultures, although which came first is unclear. At one point, Maeve is clearly parodying mortal culture. Many of these cultures are based on completely non-human mindsets and, in some cases, a lack of understanding of the morals mortals seem to hold so dear.

Various prompters and reviewers have made comments about Dresden's lack of understanding when it comes to consent. This is, again, a cultural issue, and while it understandably makes multiple people cringe, it should be viewed in that light. Several species make their living off of the lack of consent and probably wouldn't recognize consent if it smacked them in the face. Angels are in a nasty place when it comes to consent, as they have no free will to consent to anything. They just need to do their jobs.

When it comes to various creatures eating, terrorizing, or otherwise manipulating humanity, it comes down to culture. How many people feel guilty for eating a cheeseburger? That simple thing relies heavily on how you were raised, your individual personality, and your influences growing up. Same as many of the creatures in Dresden Files when it comes to their wildly varying perspectives on the different species available.

Many of the readers/writers/whatever in regards to the Dresden Files seem to be viewing the world and its characters purely in the light of their individuals cultures. It makes it difficult to empathize with the characters and to even have a logical debate about what is occurring in the books because there is only the commentator's individual viewpoint rather than the multiple viewpoints available. Dresden is regularly bashed in this meme, and sometimes even rather condescendingly pitied, for living as a wizard from a wizardly culture.

None of this post is designed to say ANYTHING is right or wrong. That is entirely against the point of this post. This post simply states that Dresden Files introduces multiple cultures and cultural perspectives, and just like a vegetarian shouldn't bash an omnivore for eating what was once a living, breathing, intelligent creature, maybe the readers/writers/etc. of the Dresden Files shouldn't be so quick as to assume their cultural viewpoint is the only viewpoint. If nothing else, this poster hopes that would make reading and writing for this series more interesting and give the various characters more depth.

How many people feel guilty for eating a cheeseburger?

^expanding on this, and hoping to emphasize your point, also not trying to imply right or wrong:

Why would someone feel guilty/not guilty for eating a cheeseburger? This is also culturally-based.

Possible reasons to feel guilty include, but are not limited to:
-vegetarian (cultural influence: eating meat/animals/once-living things)
-diet for weight loss (cultural influence: weight gain/ideal body shape)
-unhealthy eating (cultural influence: science/biology/nutrition)
-monetary expense (cultural influence: budgeting/"splurging"/wasteful spending)
-lack of enthusiasm/care (cultural influence: home cooking for the family/home family dinner ideology - not really sure what this is called, but think 50's style family dinner as an example)

....just as a few examples, since the only one included above was the vegetarian. :)

As a side note on the last, I'm not sure what to call that, but it comes from personal experience. My grandma would never have anything she (or the family) didn't prepare themselves for dinner for a long time because she believed it showed a lack of family unity (less likely to sit down at the table and eat together) and a lack of consideration for the family (sort of a time management thing, i.e. "You didn't make time for the family, that means you don't care about us as much as you care about [insert something here].").

Eventually that changed, but the idea is still out there that you cook for those you care for, so going out and eating cheeseburgers would imply that you don't have someone you care enough to cook for.

Soulgazes

(Anonymous) 2011-08-22 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
so we have been told every wizard experiences soulgaze in their own way, or at least, that's been hinted at. what about the non-wizards who get pulled into them? do they, too, have a unique method of it or do they experience it the same way the wizard whom they gaze does? What do you guys think?
randomcat: (dresden)

Re: Soulgazes

[personal profile] randomcat 2011-08-30 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's real clear in canon, but it would make sense that the wizard's strengths dictate the way he sees, while a non-magical person's experience would be filtered by whatever perceptions work best for him, just as it does for wizards. This is supposed to be seeing the truth, after all, and every person experiences truth in discrete ways.

What's I'd like to know is, how do you soulgaze a blind person? Since it's not about actual sight- Does the Third Eye do most of it anyway?

Dresden Files and Numbers

(Anonymous) 2011-09-29 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anyone ever heard of the 23 enigma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/23_enigma)? It basically says that most incidents and events are directly connected to the number 23, some modification of the number 23, or a number related to the number 23.

I watched the film The Number 23 earlier and have now spent half the day looking for the number 23 in my life. The Dresden Files is my favourite book series, so I looked into that, and now I have several connections between DF and 23 that I thought I'd share. (Also, I just wanna add that I'm no conspiracy theorist or anything, I just thought it'd be kinda fun and interesting.)

(Note: The following calculations are all derived using the premise that A=1, B=2, C=3, etc.)

Dresden Files = 115 = 5*23
Also, if I've heard right, there's going to be 20 books PLUS an apocalyptic trilogy, totaling in 23 books.

Jim = 32, which is just 23 backwards

Dresden = 69 = 3*23
Harry is 5 letters, and 5 = 2+3

Marcone = 69 = 3*23

For the slash shippers: not only do Marcone and Dresden share 69, but Marcone+Dresden = 138 = 6*23

Also for the slash shippers: John+Hendricks = 47+91 = 138 = 6*23
And: Harry+Hendricks = 70+91 = 161 = 7*23

Leanansidhe = 92 = 4*23

For the het shippers: Leanansidhe+Dresden = 92+69 = 161 = 7*23

Not shippy, but it might make you smile: Butters+Polka = 105+56 = 161 = 7*23

Then there's little Maggie Dresden. Not only does her last name link back to 23, but Maggie = 42, which, as we all know, is the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. If I was a conspiracy theorist, I might take that as a sign.

You know who else equals 42?
Kincaid.
And Odin.

(Feel free to let me know if you notice any mistakes in my math, but I think these are all correct.)

Thoughts on Morgan

(Anonymous) 2012-02-21 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This is to prep for one of the round five prompts.

Donald Morgan.

Besides that he's over a hundred, was Luccio's apprentice, and that Harry figures he's honest if a bit over-invested in his job as Warden, who is he?

We know that he was attracted to Luccio (this may be semi-common among wizard unrequited or not, rather like the old December-May professor/student marriages) and he's rather eager to troll Harry (I wonder if that has anything to do with later realizing Justin had not Been A Good Warden and thus being Even More Vigilant About His Dangerous Apprentice.)

Help me see him better?

Re: Thoughts on Morgan

(Anonymous) 2012-02-21 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish, I wish, I WISH I remembered the books well enough to help you. Morgan's one of my favorite characters, and I'd be thrilled to read anything about him.

I do remember that he has a dry sense of humor, rarely used (around Harry), and a very powerful code of honor that he holds himself to. He does seem to be a genuinely honest man who believes in doing what is right, except that 'right' changes through the series. Compare his initial, almost rabid obsession with exposing Harry as a warlock and executing him, to his personal conflict when he's ordered to kill Molly. Not to mention the change of heart he showed at the end of Turn Coat, when he says he believes Harry to be innocent.

Other observations:

Strong sense of propriety: embarrassed when Harry calls him out on abusing his hospitality.

Obsession Respect for the Laws: condemning Harry as a warlock after killing Justin. Despite the fact that it's been years and Harry was a teenager who acted out of self-defense. He's willing to play dirty if that's what it takes to prove he's right (Summer Knight), and isn't above gloating when it looks like Harry's in trouble. However, he won't actually kill Harry until he has concrete proof (he had Harry at his mercy in Storm Front, but saved his life instead).

Talent for earth magic (possibly): I think he called up spikes of earth to attack his enemies at one point. I may be wrong. Also excellent at battle magic in general, and thinking outside of the box. See Exhibit A: Fighting with Nukes.

Gradual/grudging mutual respect for Harry (eventually): Harry mentions somewhere that he develops a good deal of respect for Morgan, and that Morgan's basically a burnt-out magic cop, bitter after decades of fighting black magic. And Morgan stops seeing Harry as evil, but just someone trying to do the right (and occasionally destructive) thing.

...I want my books. Grr. Hopefully someone else can help you better. But maybe this is a start?

Reccomendations? Please?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-05 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hey there - I've been away from the meme for a good long time (I think about mid-round four, possibly early round four) and I was wondering if anyone had any good fills they could point me to, or unfilled prompts that looked interesting for me to stalk. I'm really just looking for the ones that stood out, or looked particularly interesting. Or, if you have an easy and up-to-date place I could go to and find prompts without going page by page through the rounds, that'd be great too.

If it helps, I prefer prompts without cannon vampire characters (except Thomas - I'm good with him), either consensual/happy situations or extreme dubcon/questionable noncon. I can sometimes get into tentacle or bestiality p0rn, but would prefer not to see it with Mouse or Mister. I don't think I'm really narrowing it down, but there's probably nothing I won't try if it stood out enough for you to mention it.

One thing I cannot stand: written in the style of txting/typoing. I don't mean minor typos that happen, I mean the style that does it all the time on purpose. I cannot stand to see fiction written in txtspk. I'm not sure if there have been any posts like that, but just in case. :)

Am I the only one who's starting to get fed up with the kink meme in general? It seems like there's no point in posting a prompt if it doesn't involve Marcone in some way/if you don't want Marcone involved at all.

Has anyone else noticed this? Or am I just overreacting because I've never been much of a fan of the character?

Re: Discouraged with the kink meme

You're not the only one. Much that I love Marcone, there is an abundance of him here. I do believe a rare-pair kink meme started up a while ago; I don't know if that's still active, but it might have less Marcone than there is here. I think it was on LJ, if you want to go looking for it.

Podfic beta?

[personal profile] nadir 2012-04-13 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in being a beta listener for the Dresden fic(s) I'm podding? I've never podded before so any sort of support would be awesome.

I've never podficced in my life, nor beta'd for podfic, so I'm probably not the best option! That said, I am super interested in breaking into podfic, and trying to read up on the meta, tutorials, discussion, etc. available, so I'd certainly be interested in trying. Of course, like any type of betaing, if you picked me, I would like to know more about the fic, to make sure I'd be a good match to it.

Not the most stellar of introductions, but hit me up at toughastheycome @ gmail . com if you'd like. :D

Finding Prompts/Fics

(Anonymous) 2012-04-14 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I am in need of help, fellow Anony-Mouses!

I had to switch computers recently, and I've been away from the kink meme for a while anyways. What I'm looking for are fills that I've completed and prompts that I've posted that may have had updates while I was away. Unfortunately, I don't have the links anymore to check. The few that I'm looking for specifically are:

-The Gentleman from Down Below (My prompt, not my fill)
-The Harlequin prompts (my prompts, not my fills)
-The Sentinel Fills (my prompt, one is my unfinished fill I need to work on)
-The "Switching Talents" prompt (my prompt and my unfinished fill)
-The one where Harry is pregnant - I'm pretty sure it was by a dragon, unless I'm mixing fills. (My prompt, not my fill)
-One of the marriage ones, I believe the fill was "Duecre" or something similar (my prompt, not my fill)

And any unfinished fills you might recognize as mine. I had been trying to move my fills over to AO3 here (http://archiveofourown.org/users/shinchansgirl/pseuds/shichan_DFKink), if that helps identify my style/fill type, but I didn't get all of them. I'm not as concerned about the finished ones as the unfinished ones, as I hate leaving a story, but if you notice a finished one that hasn't been posted on AO3 feel free to remind me about it.

I'll be able to tell if a story is mine or not, so if you're not sure go ahead and ask.

Maggie Jr. (Changes only)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
The foster family Susan hid the baby Moses with (sorry, wrong meme) was in what country? Was there any detail about if it was a village, or standard of living?

Re: Maggie Jr. (Changes only)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think we got much of anything about the Mendozas, not even the country. ""I found a place for her. Far away from the fighting. Where she could have a stable life. A loving home."". Four children, the youngest three, two the same age as Maggie Jr. All torn limb from limb. Stay classy, Ramps.

(>.o Man, I'd forgotten what an ass Harry is to Susan about the whole thing. He is so good at being unlikeable. It's a skill.)

House Raith Enthrallment

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
My question is really less about the consensual/not consensual nature of the court, but to how long it would take before it would become non-con. We see Margaret with Lord Raith long enough to have a child with him. Particularly in interest for a Harry/Lara fic I'm writing.,

I did a liveblog on tumblr here and did a non-spoilery review here. Also, individual posts like speculation on Marcone's deal with Vadderung and what I really didn't like about Winter's portrayal.

Also, found a blog post here.

Help fact-checking?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Guys, I'm really sorry to put this on the discussion post, since it's not technically discussion, but I didn't know where else to put it to avoid spoilers - if anyone points me to a more appropriate location, I'll be more than happy to move the request.

Can anyone give me the specs on a) how the Wild Hunt is called, b) how its victim(s) are determined, c) who controls it, d) who is vulnerable to being Hunted (what's the collateral damage look like)? and e) any other hardcanon facts about the Hunt itself? I am really really sorry to ask like this, but I LEFT MY DF BOOKS IN FRICKKIN' AMERICA and need this info for fic ASAP. I promise you TONS of cookies and gratitude and cameos and a fill of your choice, if you are willing to help me out with this.

Thank you all!

Okay, would it be possible to get some clarification and discussion on prompts based on, around, about, and including White Court vampires of the Raith variety?

It happens most times the White Court comes up.

Is is possible to request something involving any of them without continuing rape culture, triggering people, and being down right insulting but also without kink shaming the people that request it?

Ghoul Goblin?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Is anyone reading Ghoul Goblin? Is it worth it?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm probably going to feel like an idiot, but I can't find a particular fic that I know I've read multiple times.

It's a Marcone/Dresden fic told from Elaine's POV - one of the ones where Harry and John ended up working together. She goes to Marcone's mansion and thinks Marcone has brainwashed or otherwise coerced Harry to working for him while Harry was (I think) just tired of doing it all on his own.

So help?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think you mean this one?

http://dresden-kink.dreamwidth.org/1288.html?thread=616968#cmt616968

Your question was actually really interesting to me, because while I immediately recognized the description (this fic has stuck in my head) because of how it starts off, I've always thought the ending was a really really creepy, and in fact there was some scary brainwashing or something going on (hence why it has stuck in my head! It gave me a lot of chills at the time, and my mind goes back to it whenever my brain apparently has decided I need a scare).

I never even thought it was supposed to be that Harry (and I've always thought Marcone too) weren't severely compromised in some way, especially with the marked narrative disconnect. I think I described it to a friend once as an "on-purpose reverse Twilight", as one of the things I hear remarked on a lot with Twilight is how if Meyer was purposefully writing with a stark disparity between the actions and Bella's narrative, it really does work as a distressingly on-point horror story, and is quite clever. That's completely the effect I've ascribed to this fic-- Harry and Marcone are kind of the Bellas here, and Elaine is the audience going GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT.

Anyway, tl'dr, I think this is the fic, and reader reception is a neat thing.

Looking for a fic

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
(Mods - I didn't see anything against using this post to track things down, but if I'm in the wrong place, please let me know.)

Alright. I'm about to be massively unhelpful, so brace yourselves.

I'm looking for a fic. I don't remember the name. I don't remember the author. I found it on her livejournal (could have been dreamwidth, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't) and I don't think it was posted anywhere else. Anyway, it's kind of a semi-AU spin-off in which Dresden uses the Shroud of Turin to revive Marcone's daughter; while he's ultimately successful, the effort nearly kills him, and there's angsty Dresden/Marcone fluff and Marcone's daughter being adorable and named something Italian and non-canon.

I've been looking to the best of my ability all day, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

So much Hate

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I'm pretty sure a bunch of people are going to jump on this, but I'm kind of squicked out by all the hate that people throw around involving this series.
First thing, I haven't brushed up on the earlier books recently, but all I see in discussions involving any of these books is "OMG look at that, let's take it completely out of context and then proceed to say that the author is putting all of his horrible views to influence people and promote rape/chauvinism"
Author is not their story, and besides the magic the Dresden Files, it portrays a pretty accurate American culture.
No one thinks rape is O.K, at least that is what I like to think, but these discussions are on a kink meme that has an enormous amount of noncon in it, yet no one attacks those fanfic writers.
When I read discussions with the hate and attacks on the characters and the author of the DF series, all I can think of is; why do you read the series? why the outrage?
I honestly want to know if people have earnest discussions on more than what they hate or focusing on one thing in an incredibly diverse and well researched series?

Re: So much Hate

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree with you that there are times when I want to ask "Then why do you read the series?" (or even "Are we reading the same series?"), and that Jim Butcher isn't Harry Dresden and that conflating the two is going to lead to a lot of misreadings.

That said, the early books ARE gross. So are, occasionally, the later books, but it seems more intentional in them than in the earlier ones. And, yeah, the gross parts aren't the whole book, but that makes it worse, because one minute it's funny and it's awesome and the next minute Harry's slobbering over barely legal tits or thinking about coercing women into sex, so I get annoyed about the slobbering over barely legal tits/coercing women into sex bits AND about the fact that funny, awesome bits got stopped for that. If the books flat-out sucked, I wouldn't have kept reading and I wouldn't have cared.

What happened?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-21 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, or if anyone is even here, but I've recently started reading this series and went looking for fanfic and found...a ghost town? 2011/2012 people were writing like crazy and there are some truly amazing stories, but in 2014 the community just seemed to taper off and die. What's up? I feel like a traveler who stumbled upon a small, dying town, and I can see where it used to be a metropolis before some untold disaster struck.

Supposedly Dresden Files is ongoing so, what the heck happened???
