Dressing Room

Ack! Close the door; people are changing in here!

This post is for RPG shenanigans. The rules stand. A short refresher: don't be an asshole.

This post-specifics: multiple characters are okay. Characters specific to alternate verses are okay. OCs are okay. Your journal coming in to hang too is okay. There isn't a formal scenario here; it's an open sandbox where all characters and community-watchers can come and play. If your thread is going adult-only, put up a notice in the subject line. If it's going into trigger territory, don't be an asshole: no noncon-noncon'ing anyone, watchers included. Don't start OOC shit.

And have a blast!

(Don't have a dreamwidth account for your character(s)? Go check out [site community profile] dw_codesharing. If there's nothing on the first page, dig deep. Lots get missed, especially when new codes go out. Also, check out the code sharing post.)

There had to be a better word than giggled, but that's what she did when she saw her refilled drink, newly decorated, pressing her hand to her mouth lest she accidentally show the chef what his food looked like being enjoyed.

"Thank you!" she said, once her mouth was empty, laughed some more, and took a sip, and then put the orange slice in the drink, pressing it down a little with her straw. "Even better the second time."

Oh man, she was getting the 'I'm listening' face. She must have been running at the mouth even more than she'd realized. "Oh goodness, I've just dumped my whole day on you, practically, haven't I? I'm so sorry-- this is really good, thank you, just what I needed." She gestured at the meal, fries half gone, at least a third of the sandwich devoured. "I was too nervous to eat this morning, so all I had was a latte. Dumb! I know! But at least I get to enjoy this now. How long have you been here? I can't imagine you're not famous if everything tastes like this."

She speared another fry with her fork, popping it in her mouth.

He shrugged at her apolog, giving a "Meh," that translated roughly as 'I'm a bartender. I get that from time to time.' The praise got a smile. He was proud. There were reasons he wasn't a big name among the foodie community, but he was proud.

When she was engrossed at eating he spent some time polishing the bartop, taking another few orders. The plates went onto the bartop, in accordance with his 'you have feet, come get it' policy.

"Big meeting?" he asked, after a while.

"Uh--" She looked up at the question, chasing the some fries around the plate, trying to let her belly forget it was a large meal for lunch and open up some room for the rest. No way she was letting this meal go to waste.

"Sorry! ...Yeah, I guess so. I haven't seen my sister in years. I moved to California-- I haven't been back."

She'd tried, a few times. Made sounds about coming home for Christmas, after they'd moved. But her dad had changed so much, and Lara hadn't been interested, and yeah, she knew. She knew. She'd turned her back on them-- on being. God. White Court. On eating people. But she'd thought they'd stay family.

They'd gone to Bobby's parents' house for Christmas instead, outside of St. Paul.

"Family. Mm." It was a pretty noncommittal grunt that vaguely indicated that families could be difficult, without leveling accusations.

"Looking forward?" he asked, because it didn't sound like she was. He kept an ear out for any signs that he was pushing too far-- he wasn't a priest, he wasn't after a confession. He liked people to leave his bar less stressed than they came in, though.

She took a drink of lemonade, considering. "...I miss my brother. He was always kind of flake, but he was really great to me. And I miss his... girlfriend, I guess. I really miss my old room. I don't think my other sisters are going to be like a I remember, though." She frowned. "Sorry-- hi there, stranger! Here's all my problems!"

She laughed, shot him a smile to take the moodiness off of it. "Who knows! Lara was never great on the phone. It might be really wonderful. I'm just all nerves!"

"Bartender," he reminded her with a gentle smile.

His eyebrow quirked; there was no other sign that he'd recognized the name. "Raith?" he asked, casually.

"You know her?"

It takes her a minute.

Oh.

Right.

That was really stupid, Inari.

"I'm not." She said, yanked her bag up from the floor. Took a sharp breath through her nose, puts on a smile. "Can I get my bill? I don't want to be late."

He frowned, and pointed discretely to the plaque; if she could read it at this distance, Accorded Neutral Territory. He didn't draw lines with his clientele based on what or who they were-- only what they did.

All this young woman-- not a White in full fledge unless he'd gone blind over ight-- had done was to be nervous and have some fries.

He tallied check silently-- handwritten, neat and angular, on a little carbon-copy pad. It was generic restaurant supply, with a printed 'thank you for choosing us! We look forward to seeing you again' across the bottom of every sheet.

He circled it before passing her the slip and spearing the yellow copy next to the register.

She followed his gesture to the plaque, squinting at it while she found her wallet in her bag, counted out the price and a good tip, movements tight and jerky.

"...What does. Accorded Neutral Territory mean?"

"Means everyone drinks here. Leave vendettas at the door."

He shook my head. "Shouldn't have asked; not my business. Neutral territory."

Vendettas. Her stomach didn't sink as much as maybe it should ahve. She wasn't sure when she'd realized, but she knows: the cat isn't very popular with the mice.

"...Okay. Okay." The edges of her smile melted a little, but what was left over wasn't quite as forced. She got to her feet, tugged her bag close. "Thank you. I'm going to be in town all week. What are your hours?"

He held up a finger and lightly took her receipt back, to jot the hours on the back before passing it back.

"Anytime," he invited her back. "Good to see a new face."
